Fingerprint FAQ:

The Uneik Process & The “Tactile” Difference

Q: What makes a Uneik fingerprint piece different from standard engraved jewellery?

A: Unlike many brands that use simple, flat laser engraving, Uneik utilizes a traditional lost-wax casting technique. We digitally refine your loved one’s actual print, 3D print it into a physical wax model, and cast it in solid precious metal. This creates a deep, highly tactile three-dimensional impression that you can physically run your fingers over. It is a true part of the metal, made to last generations.

Q: Will the fingerprint on my jewellery be true to size?

A: Yes! This is the “Uneik Difference.” We do not shrink or resize fingerprints. We believe a fingerprint loses its personal identity when it is artificially scaled down. If an adult print is larger than the pendant or ring you selected, our design team will beautifully frame the most detailed, unique part of the print—such as a prominent swirl, loop, or arch.   (Note: Handprints, footprints, and paw prints are proportionally resized to fit your piece flawlessly).

Q: Can I see a preview of my jewellery before it is made in metal?

A: Absolutely. We want you to love your keepsake. You can request a digital layout proof when placing your order. Our design team will email you a mockup of how the print will sit on your chosen piece. We will show you the print placement and any engraving layouts and we will only proceed to the metal pour once you’ve given us the green light.

Taking & Submitting the Prints

Q: How does your Free Inkless Print Kit work?

A: Once you place your order, we dispatch a clean, mess-free Inkless Print Kit to your door. It includes a specialised, non-toxic wipe and reactive paper that captures high-definition ridge details without leaving ink on the skin. The kit comes with clear instructions and a reply-paid envelope to send the prints back to our Ballarat studio. We also include instructions should you wish to digital upload the prints to our studio.

Q: I already have a fingerprint on file. Can I use it?

A: Yes. If you have an existing print from a birth certificate, a previous keepsake card, or a digital scan from a funeral director or hospital, we can absolutely use it. Simply take a clear, high-resolution photo or scan of the print and upload it, following instructions contained in your order confirmation email. If you would prefer us to check the print prior to ordering please email it to our team (hello@uneik.com.au).

Q: What happens if my print at home smudges or doesn’t look perfect?

A: Don’t stress! Our inkless kits include enough materials for you to take multiple attempts. Our design team digitally cleans up minor smudges, stray lines, or background noise to ensure a clear cast while maintaining 100% of the authentic ridge shapes. If none of the prints are usable, we will gently let you know and can arrange a replacement kit.

Q: Tips for capturing the perfect fingerprint at home:

  • Clean and dry: Ensure the finger is entirely free of lotions, moisture, or lint.

  • Keep it flat: Always place the collection paper on a hard, steady surface (like a clipboard or table).

  • Light pressure: Do not roll or press the finger firmly into the paper. A light, one-second tap yields the crispest line details without smudging.

Age Restrictions, Faint Prints & Alternatives

Q: Can you create fingerprint jewellery for newborns and infants?

A: Yes, but with an important caveat. A baby’s fingers are tiny and fingerprint ridges are incredibly fine, shallow, and still developing in their first year of life, which means ink prints can sometimes look faint or blurry. We recommend to either wait till 6 months old to try or consider handprints or footprints for newborns.

Privacy, Data, & Re-ordering

Q: How do you protect my privacy and fingerprint data?

A: We take data privacy incredibly seriously. Your digital prints are securely archived in an encrypted format using a unique, coded filing system that is completely separated from your personal contact details. These prints are never shared, sold, or used for any purpose outside of crafting your jewellery. Furthermore, these are image files, not the biometric data used for identity verification (like unlocking smartphones or passports).

Q: Do you keep my prints on file if I want to order again later?

A: Yes! We permanently keep your refined digital prints on file. If you or a family member wish to order a matching piece or a new style in the future, you won’t need to retake the prints. Simply select “No Kit Required” at checkout and provide your original order number or name. We also supply a card with your order, recording the print number for you to share with family and friends.

Materials, Customisation, & Production Timelines

Q: What materials do you use?

A: Every single Uneik piece is handcrafted from scratch in our regional Victorian studio using solid, premium-grade metals: Solid Sterling Silver (925) and Solid 9ct Yellow, Rose, or White Gold (375). We do not use cheap base metals or thin gold plating/vermeil, ensuring your heirloom will never rub off or fade over time.

Q: Can I put multiple prints on one piece of jewellery, or make it double-sided?

A: Yes! We feature an extensive collection of double-sided pendants, as well as duo and trio layouts designed to feature multiple family members, children, or pets on a single keepsake.

Q: How long does the entire process take?

A:

  1. Kit Dispatch: Sent within 24–48 hours of your order.

  2. Print Collection: Completely up to your timeline! Take the prints whenever you are ready.

  3. Production: Once we receive your prints back at our studio (and after proof approval), it takes approximately 10 days to print, cast, hand-finish, and polish your custom piece.

Memorial & Time-Sensitive Orders

Q: I need a print kit urgently before a funeral. Can you help?

A: We understand how delicate, emotional, and time-sensitive these moments are. If a loved one has recently passed away, please contact us immediately. Most hospitals, palliative care staff, and funeral directors are well-equipped to capture ink or digital fingerprints if you ask them. If you need a print kit rushed to a facility, please call our studio directly so we can fast-track your request.

Q: Can you incorporate memorial ashes or handwriting into the jewellery?

A: Yes, we specialize in comprehensive memorial keepsakes. We can combine fingerprints with custom handwriting engraving (such as a signature or note from an old card) or delicately fuse cremation ashes into dedicated resin sections alongside your fingerprint cast. Let us help you tell your unique story.
